David Swenson

Is arguably the most sought after Ashtanga yoga teacher in the world. He’s been practicing for over 50 years and is one of only a handful of people to complete all of the Ashtanga series…and now he’s coming to Lime House Yoga!

Join us as we welcome David Swenson next June 2024 for 3 days of fantastic yoga workshops and 7 days of teacher training. David will be opening with three days of weekend workshops – Friday evening, three shorter Saturday workshops and a full day Sunday workshop.

Following on from this he will be running his 7 day Teacher Training – a 40 hour course designed as an intensive immersion into the teaching techniques of the Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga.

David Swenson began practicing yoga in 1969 at the age of 13. His older brother Doug Swenson was his first teacher. They practiced Hatha yoga from whatever books they could find. David’s introduction to Ashtanga yoga came in 1973 when he met David Williams and Nancy Gilgoff in Encinitas, California. In 1975, David and Nancy brought K. Pattabhi Jois to the U.S. for the first time, and David Swenson was fortunate enough to be there. He then made his first trip to Mysore in 1977.

He is recognised today as one of the world’s foremost practitioners and instructors of Ashtanga yoga. He has produced a wide selection of videos, posters and other yoga resources, including the highly popular book, Ashtanga Yoga: The Practice Manual.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga

Ashtanga yoga offers a therapeutic methodology designed to promote healing on many levels.

It is a curriculum that involves freeing and strengthening the body, breath, and mind, through repetition and gradual augmentation of specific practices.

Each person moves through a prescribed series of breath synchronized movements in the form of classical asana at an individual pace.

The practitioner and their practice evolve symbiotically.

The practices progress from the cultivation of physical mobility and stability in asana to the enhancement of the breath capacity through pranayama. Continued concentration evolves into meditative states establishing a settled, more open, connected sense of self.

What begins with great effort over time finds ease, like a song well practiced will reveal and express the union of musician and instrument.

Even simple practice can produce moments of internal harmony.

Yoga does not promise a life without hardship, sorrow, or pain.

But it gives us tools to keep the mind steady through success and failure.

    Saturday 8th June 11am – 1:30pm A Fun-filled exploration of Vinyasa and Arm-balances

One of the greatest challenges of the Ashtanga flow is the vinyasa. In this class David Swenson will break the vinyasa down into its basic components in order to explore techniques for creating greater lightness and efficiency of practice while using less effort to achieve greater ease.

In addition to vinyasa the class will also explore elements of handstands and arm-balances. It is common to feel intimidated or even frightened by balancing on our hands. David will address this issue and offer practical methods of approach to allow for greater confidence and ability that can be carried away and applied within a personal practice. There will be partner work as well as individual techniques offered. There is always plenty of laughter and fun as well as a depth of information in David’s classes. All levels may attend even if you have never done a handstand before. Alternatives are always given.

  • Really Hip Openings for the Hips | £55

Saturday 8th June 3 – 5:30pm A Pleasant Exploration of Gentle Methods To Open the Hips

Tight hips can cause problems in other areas such as the knees and back. David Swenson has devised an approach of exploring the hips through slow and gentle movements, stable holding of postures and deep breathing which all combine to bring greater openness to the hips without forcing or pushing. To create stability David will share methods of activating one area in order to relax another. This balanced approach is both safe and effective and can be applied to other regions of the body as well. As always, David will manage to make this enjoyable experience.

This will then be followed by a talk-through of the Full First Series with David leading every breath of the way. David is well known for his compassionate approach and encouraging presentation to all students.
