in these Iyengar Yoga Ropes workshops
Let Senior Iyengar teacher Lucy Aldridge show you the ropes, quite literally, by teaching you how to use the Iyengar yoga rope wall right here at Lime House Yoga!
In these special 3-hour Iyengar Yoga Ropes workshops, you will be given your own ‘rope station’ on our beautifully designed Iyengar Yoga Rope wall and Lucy will teach you how to use the ropes and other yoga props to deepen and enhance your practice.
Iyengar yoga is named after and developed by B.K.S. Iyengar who was a direct disciple of T. Krishnamacharya. Together with Pattabhi Jois (who developed Ashtanga yoga) he was instrumental in bringing the practice of modern yoga, as we know it now, to the West.
The Iyengar Yoga system is well known for paying attention to the body’s alignment within a pose and the use of props to support and maintain yoga poses, allowing you to develop a new awareness within each posture to enhance the effects of the poses.
“The most important thing to bring to a yoga practice is a sense of humour. I often reflect upon this, allowing my imagination to guide me during my learning, using it whilst teaching so students see their practice or poses in a slightly different way.” – B.K.S. Iyengar
The correct name of the practice of yoga with ropes is Yoga Kurunta, which translates as Yoga Puppetry. Yoga ropes can be used to either offer support to your body by reversing the effects of gravity or they can be used to enhance and deepen the effect of a pose.
The use of ropes attached to a ‘Yoga rope wall’ was popularised by Iyengar yoga founder B.K.S. Iyengar, so that yoga practitioners could practice poses that would be otherwise unavailable to them or to go ‘deeper in poses’.
“Did you know hand grip strength is also a bio marker for age… hanging on to the ropes can significantly improve it!
Iyengar yoga also encourage students to hold poses for longer periods of time. When stability is achieved in a pose, it’s then possible to safely intensify the depth of the posture. This helps to help develop strength and flexibility, along with sensitivity and awareness between the body and mind.
“Yoga is for all. Nobody should be denied the opportunity to experience its benevolence” – B.K.S. Iyengar
Yoga props, such as blocks and belts, can help you to achieve a pose with more ease and then with this felt sense of the pose it can be integrated with a greater understanding back into your regular yoga asana practice with deeper self-awareness, precision and alignment whilst improving your stamina, flexibility and confidence.
We all get niggles and injuries from time to time and that is when using props can be a game changer for our practice by allowing us to still practice postures safely and effectively giving us time to heal.
As your knowledge on how to use props effectively grows you will be able to use them creatively to achieve a deeper understanding of how to strengthen, release, extend and balance your body in your practice.
Knowing how and when to use a yoga prop will increase the beneficial effects of your yoga practice.

We have studio mats for you to use, however we advise you to eventually buy your own mat. We sell a small select range of yoga mats that we recommend/use ourselves. Cheap yoga mats are ok to start with but you will feel the difference in a high quality yoga mat as it will make your practice far more enjoyable. Cheap thin mats don’t offer the support and comfort that a higher quality mat provides.
Wear comfortable clothing with layers that are easily removed or added to allow for changes in body temperature during class. Be ready to practice in bare feet. This is the traditional (and safest) way to practice. One thing that we would recommend is to wear a top that you can keep on until you warm up and that you can put on at the end of a class, especially for Shavasana (relaxation).
Yes. If you book you are guaranteed your place in the class. To register for a class you have to select the class you’re interested and then choose either Join Us in Studio or if it’s available, then Book Online.
All the weekly classes are available on the classes page. If you have problems booking then call us on 07774 311227 and we’ll book you into the class of your choice if there is space.
