The Power of Community

The Power of Community

When we opened the doors to our little yoga space in 2011, we never expected to be writing this story eight years on.  Our vision was simply to create a community of people connected through the yoga practice we love and share the beautiful space we feel so blessed to look after.

Local people came through recommendation and word of mouth and our community grew.  Internationally renowned yoga teachers became friends, who graced our community with their skill, energy and passion for yoga, bringing world-class, quality teaching to our little corner of the world. And still we grew…

People travelled from all four corners of the globe to immerse themselves in the teaching, the tranquillity of the space and be nurtured by the food we provide.  And still we grew.  We began supporting new teachers on their journey towards yoga teaching so that they too might be able to do a job they love.  And still we grew.  We threw parties, taught for free, raised money, gave 5% of our profits away.  And still we grew.  Our community connected, people met, people laughed, people fell in love and most wonderfully they offered support to each other when things were tough.

And one day we realised that this space we hold and the community we’d created, was a real-life business.  A business that impacts on the lives of thousands of people in Cornwall and across the world and enables us to do what we love as a job…it really doesn’t get any better than this.

Three years ago we realised we’d outgrown the little ‘games room’ on the back of our house and began to think about how we could build a new space that would enable us to offer more of what our community wants and needs.  It seemed like an obvious and much needed step to take, but along the way we found that others didn’t quite see it that way.  Our planning application journey took two attempts, three years, many sleepless nights, a few tears and a whole heap of love and support from this amazing community we hold so dear.

When we asked for help, our community gave it back to us in spades.  Reading through the 160 letters of support for our planning application from across the world made us realise that whatever happened, we were doing something that people needed, appreciated and loved.  We have never felt so humbled and grateful to be able to do what we do and to be honest if that was how it stayed it would have been worth it.

But we stuck with it because we believed that what we were doing was right for our community.  We now have our planning permission, £160,000 of European funding and a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to expanding what we do.  Yes we want to be able to offer more classes, more teacher training, more retreats, to make the yoga practice accessible to all those who need it most.  But more importantly for us, we want to continue to grow this wonderful community, creating connection and purpose, friendships and support and improving people’s health and wellbeing.

I’d love to look back and say we had a business plan which laid all this out but that would be very far from the truth!  In fact all we’ve ever done is what feels right for us and for the wonderful community we hold so dear.  We’ve just tried to be who we are and hold space for people when they need it.  Often it was yoga but sometimes a space to sit, to laugh, to cry and to be heard.

We have learnt some stuff along the way though:

  • Stay true to your values and purpose, yes they keep you focused on what you want to do but more importantly on who and how you want to be in the world.
  • Be able to sit quietly in your discomfort, feel the emotions and how that feels to your body and mind and then let it go
  • Be grateful for what you have, every day there are people who have more or less than you, better or worse lives.  There is always a reason to be thankful for something – friends, family, nature, birdsong, being alive, laughter, silence.
  • Ask for help, people want to give it
  • Give your time, it is your most precious gift and is so appreciated by those you share it with

As we look to the future, we look forward to welcoming more people to the Lime House Yoga community.  Each and every person brings something unique and makes us what we are.  We will continue to share what we love and hold space for people who need it and in doing so, we hope we inspire others to do the same.

The world is a busy place and we have busy lives but every day, every one of us has a choice.  We can shift our gaze, withdrawn our hand, move away.  Or we can connect, lean in and be part of making the world more connected, more peaceful, more beautiful.

Thank you to each and every one of our community, it has been and continues to be remarkable journey and we feel blessed to be sharing it with you.
