This Ashtanga Yoga Fundamentals workshop is designed to start you on the journey to learn the Ashtanga Primary series so that you can join the Self Practice sessions (Mysore*) that we run every Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 7am. Ashtanga Yoga a form of Hatha Yoga that is based on a practice of yoga that slowly builds in difficulty to allow students to safely access their full potential. Don’t worry if you have never practiced Ashtanga Yoga before, if you have ever attended a Vinyasa class you will be familiar with many of the poses. Our aim is to help each student evolve into an independent practitioner and to enjoy the mental and physical benefits that the Ashtanga practice can bring. You will learn elements of the Ashtanga Primary Series in a way which makes the practice accessible to everyone regardless of your experience or flexibility. The Ashtanga sequence is often viewed as only suitable for those who are athletic, strong and flexible. Traditionally however the sequence is adapted to the individual with modifications and props available to ensure safe and sustainable lifelong practice. The Self Practice method is the traditional was taught to students. Think of it as a 1-2-1 but in a group environment. This differs from the standard led (guided) classes that we are familiar with in the west. The self-practice method requires that the practitioner learn each series in turn and practice at their own pace. There are 6 series in total that progressively build in difficulty. You start with the primary (1st Series), also known as yoga chikitsa (yoga therapy). Once you become proficient at the practicing the primary series you then progress through the Intermediate series (Nadi Shodhana – cleansing the subtle energy channels) * Mysore – named after the place in Indian where it was first taught.

Seeking A Path, Building Dreams and Finding Peace David will share Stories, Anecdotes and Insights gained over his more than 40 years of yoga practice and pursuits of spiritual life, love, health and adventure. David is a witty, humorous and inspiring storyteller. His life is filled with colorful, sometimes wild, sometimes sad, sometimes hilarious and always entertaining pursuits of knowledge of the world around him and the wonders that reside within us all. Within his tales of travel, fasting, chanting, seeking, studying, laughing and crying there is always a thread of sincerity of purpose that anyone seeking greater meaning of life can relate to and possibly even gain tools of insights of their own from the mistakes, successes, failures, triumphs and bumps along the road of life that David shares with honesty and heart-felt sincerity. Buckle Up It’s a Wild Ride!
Fully Led Primary Series Flow Dancing with the Breath in a First Series Rhythm This class is designed for those already familiar with the First Series of Ashtanga Yoga yet it is open to all levels of proficiency from the daily-practicing aficionados to the novice fit-it-in-when-I-can weekend warriors and everyone in between. The class will be conducted like a choreographed dance flowing all of the way from the opening sun salutations to the closing savasana. David will spend time at the beginning of class to introduce alternatives to some of the more challenging asanas as well as offer user-friendly vinyasa options. Class will be followed by an open discussion allowing students to ask David questions about any topics of interest. Required Items: Mat and Breath
A Fun-filled exploration of Vinyasa and Arm-balances One of the greatest challenges of the Ashtanga flow is the vinyasa. In this class David will break the vinyasa down into its basic components in order to explore techniques for creating greater lightness and efficiency of practice while using less effort to achieve greater ease. In addition to vinyasa the class will also explore elements of handstands and arm-balances. It is common to feel intimidated or even frightened by balancing on our hands. David will address this issue and offer practical methods of approach to allow for greater confidence and ability that can be carried away and applied within a personal practice. There will be partner work as well as individual techniques offered. There is always plenty of laughter and fun as well as a depth of information in David’s classes. All levels may attend even if you have never done a handstand before. Alternatives are always given. Come and Experience the Joy of Flight!
A Pleasant Exploration of Gentle Methods To Open the Hips Tight hips can cause problems in other areas such as the knees and back. David has devised an approach of exploring the hips through slow and gentle movements, stable holding of postures and deep breathing which all combine to bring greater openness to the hips without forcing or pushing. To create stability David will share methods of activating one area in order to relax another. This balanced approach is both safe and effective and can be applied to other regions of the body as well. As always, David will manage to make this enjoyable experience. Bring Those Tight Hips In For a Tune-Up!
A Full Day Immersion Into the Joy of Ashtanga Yoga This class is an in-depth immersion and fun-filled exploration of the dynamic system of Ashtanga Yoga covering as much ground as is possible in one full day. This immersion is arranged in 2 sessions, morning and afternoon. In the morning there will be an overview of the First Series with David offering user-friendly alternatives to many of the more complex asanas as well as an array of options for the vinyasas. This will then be followed by a talk-through of the Full First Series with David leading every breath of the way. David is well known for his compassionate approach and encouraging presentation to all students. There will then be a break for lunch In the afternoon session David will give further details about individual asanas and answer questions the students may have about aspects of their own personal yogic journey or unique interests. There will be time spent partnering during an in-depth exploration of the realms of vinyasa. David refers to this as the Physics of Flight. It is a fun-filled section of the day and full of energy. Things will begin to wind down with a discussion about the wonder of breath and it’s applications in daily life as well as yoga. The day will end with David leading the group through some gentle and soothing pranayama techniques as well as a guided deep relaxation. It is going to be a spectacular event. You are sure to go home with a smile on your face and a feeling of knowledge gained, laughter shared and new friends made! Don’t Miss It!

Different to Vedantic or Buddhist meditation, yogic meditation contains the same structural elements as yogic postures and breathing and was designed to form together with those an integrated whole. Meditation is the method of bringing your mind into a receptive state so that you can receive higher knowledge that is already there.
Imagine how great it would be to have a switch that, when operated, would enable you to consciously choose between your right and left brain hemispheres, intuitive and analytical intelligence, sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, fight/flight reflex and rest/relaxation, and between the male and female, solar and lunar, aspects of your psyche
Do you remember a time when you knew that your life would be amazing and that you would live to make a meaningful contribution to life on Earth and the life of others? And then what happened? Somehow our education and the process of enculturation cut us off from this sacred knowledge and élan vital. We became cynics and “realists”.
