Yoga, Surf and Relax on the Beautiful Island of Barbados

 

After the success of the 2017 Barbados retreat Jock Orton is offering the chance once more to practice yoga, surf, explore and relax on the beautiful Caribbean Island of Barbados.  Deepen or begin your Ashtanga practice with a daily assisted self-practice, afternoon technique and theory classes and meditation.

 

Each day will begin with a morning Mysore self-practice with Jock on hand to adjust and support you.  Don’t worry if you are unfamiliar with the Ashtanga series of poses as they will be there to support each student’s body, breath and mind giving guidance through physical and verbal adjustments and instructions where necessary. Jock’s aim is to help each student evolve into an independent practitioner and to enjoy the mental and physical benefits that the Ashtanga practice can bring.

 

After morning practice, Emma will feed you a delicious breakfast and a help-yourself lunch of bread, cheese and salad is provided each day.  Before dinner there will be a theory or technique class taught by Jock, leaving you with the main part of the day to either explore the island, relax at the beach (which is only a short walk away) or just chill out next to the private pool in the grounds.  Our evening meal will be a delicious two-course vegetarian offering making the most of the fresh local produce and with a fish option for those who want it.

If you haven’t been to Barbados before you may not know that the island has two very different coastlines. On the west coast where we are located, is the Caribbean sea.  Picture white sandy beaches, coconut palms and turquoise warm waters lapping at the beach! Barbados is truly a paradise island where it won’t take you long to unwind and settle into the relaxed Caribbean pace of life.

 

On the east coast is the Atlantic Ocean. With the trade winds bringing a constant north-easterly swell, it has shaped the land into dramatic rock formations, wild un-crowded beaches and consistent surf. The small village of Bathsheba in the middle of the east coast is home to one of Kelly Slater’s (eleven times world surfing champion) favourite surf spots in the whole world. Definitely not for beginners! The south of the island has more learner friendly waves.

Our accommodation is Mullins Bay Estate on the beautiful Caribbean coast.  The houses are set in an acre of private grounds with a swimming pool and yoga will be either on the terrace or out in the lush gardens.  Mullins Bay, a 5-minute stroll away has the famous Mullins Bar from where you can watch the sun set over a cocktail.

 

We will be organising a range of trips to our favourite places during the week including – the wildlife reserve, botanical gardens, Barbados museum and our favourite snorkelling at local ship wrecks and marine reserves.  Jock and Emma have been coming to Barbados for over a decade and know the island well.

 

Jock Orton has been teaching for 14 years and co-owns Lime House Yoga in beautiful Cornwall with Emma the Lime House Chef.  Originally an Anusara teacher and student of Bridget Woods-Kramer, he now practices Ashtanga and is one of only a handfull of senior teachers to be acredited with of John Scott’s 500hr certification.  Jock teaches a strong, flowing practice with an emphasis on alignment, anatomy and enjoyment.

 

Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga is a systematic sequence of predetermined flowing postures linked together with the breath. Intended to be practiced daily, this powerful, healing practice is a specific sequence of postures (asanas) linking breath (pranayama) and movement (vinyasa.) Ashtanga is an athletic flow combining strength, flexibility and stamina for a complete practice.

 

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is different from many yoga classes in the West in that the order of asanas is completely predefined. A practice will comprise four main parts: an “opening sequence,” one of the six main “series”, a back-bending sequence, and a set of inverted asanas, referred to as the “finishing sequence.” Practice always ends with savasana.

Accommodation

Mullins Bay house is set in 3/4 of an acre of gardens with it’s own private pool.

Food

The food we serve on the retreat is organic where possible, colourful, healthy and most importantly tastes amazing. We are passionate about supportimg  local food suppliers. Predominantly vegan although we will occasionaly have fish options as the fish is freshly caught and bought from the local fish market two minutes from the house. We love trying new recipes so that no two days are the same.

Your payment includes a non-refundable deposit of £125. In the event you cancel 60 days or more prior to the retreat the remaining balance will be refunded. In the event you cancel less than 60 days prior to the retreat payments are not refundable. By booking you agree to abide by our full terms and conditions which can be read here.

 

Residential prices are based on two people sharing a room and includes accommodation, full board and yoga. Single supplements are available for a 50% charge. The price excludes travel and transfers.
